When pregnancy needs a little more care

Some pregnancies require more frequent monitoring because of an existing health condition, a previous pregnancy history or a condition that develops during pregnancy.
Conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and thyroid disorders can affect pregnancy and may require closer monitoring and treatment adjustments. Appropriate antenatal care helps healthcare professionals identify concerns early and respond to them appropriately.

Did you know?

High-risk pregnancy is not one single condition.
A pregnancy may be considered high risk because of a medical condition that existed before pregnancy, a condition that develops during pregnancy, or pregnancy-specific factors such as multiple pregnancy or certain previous pregnancy complications.

Diabetes & Blood Sugar During Pregnancy

What it is
High blood sugar during pregnancy can occur as gestational diabetes (GDM) or may be present as diabetes that existed before pregnancy. Both require appropriate monitoring and management during pregnancy.
When is it required
If you have diabetes before pregnancy, develop high blood sugar during pregnancy, have risk factors for diabetes, or receive an abnormal glucose test result, your pregnancy may require closer monitoring.
What to expect
Dr. Rutuja will assess your blood sugar status and pregnancy history and guide you regarding monitoring, nutrition, physical activity where appropriate, medication if required, and follow-up. Diabetes in pregnancy can increase the risk of complications, which is why appropriate management and monitoring matter.

High Blood Pressure During Pregnancy

What it is
High blood pressure during pregnancy can range from hypertension that existed before pregnancy to pregnancy-related conditions such as gestational hypertension and pre-eclampsia.
When is it required
Women with existing hypertension, a previous history of pre-eclampsia, diabetes, kidney disease, multiple pregnancy or other risk factors may require closer monitoring. High blood pressure can also develop during pregnancy in women who previously had normal blood pressure.
What to expect
Your blood pressure, symptoms and overall pregnancy health may be monitored more closely. Depending on your situation, Dr. Rutuja may recommend blood and urine tests, medication, additional fetal monitoring or specialist coordination. Pre-eclampsia can become serious, so recognising concerning symptoms and monitoring appropriately are important.

Thyroid Disorders during Pregnancy

What it is
The thyroid produces hormones that help regulate the body’s metabolism and other important functions. Thyroid disorders such as an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) or overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) can require careful management during pregnancy.
When is it required
If you already have thyroid disease, take thyroid medication, have symptoms or risk factors, or have an abnormal thyroid test, your doctor may recommend appropriate evaluation and monitoring.
What to expect
Dr. Rutuja will review your thyroid history, medications and relevant test results and guide you regarding monitoring and treatment during pregnancy. Thyroid treatment may need adjustment during pregnancy, so prescribed medication should never be stopped or changed without medical advice.

Pregnancy Specific High-Risk Conditions

What it is
Some conditions develop specifically during pregnancy and can require closer maternal and fetal monitoring. These may include pre-eclampsia, gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes, pregnancy-related bleeding and other obstetric complications.
When is it required
If a pregnancy develops a condition that can affect the mother or baby’s health, the frequency and type of antenatal monitoring may need to change.
What to expect
Dr. Rutuja assesses the condition, pregnancy stage and individual risk factors and develops an appropriate monitoring and treatment plan. When hospital-based or specialised care is required, she can coordinate care with recognised hospitals and relevant specialists.

What Our Patients Say

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a high-risk pregnancy?

A high-risk pregnancy is one in which the mother, baby or both may have a higher chance of developing complications compared with a routine pregnancy. This can happen because of a health condition that existed before pregnancy, such as diabetes or hypertension, a condition that develops during pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes or pre-eclampsia, or factors such as multiple pregnancy or a previous pregnancy complication. Being labelled “high risk” does not mean that something will definitely go wrong. It means your pregnancy may benefit from closer observation and a more individualised care plan.

Does having diabetes mean I cannot have a healthy pregnancy?

Not necessarily. Many women with diabetes have successful pregnancies, particularly when the condition is appropriately managed. Diabetes during pregnancy does, however, require careful attention because elevated blood sugar can increase the risk of certain complications. Dr. Rutuja can help monitor your pregnancy and coordinate appropriate blood sugar management, nutrition and treatment. If you already have diabetes and are planning a pregnancy, discussing your health with your doctor before conception can also help optimise your care.

Is high blood pressure during pregnancy dangerous?

High blood pressure during pregnancy can sometimes be mild and manageable, but certain hypertensive disorders can become serious if they are not recognised and managed appropriately. Pre-eclampsia is one such condition and can affect multiple organs and the placenta. This is why blood pressure monitoring and appropriate assessment during antenatal care are important. If you experience severe headache, vision changes, severe upper abdominal pain or other concerning symptoms, seek medical assessment promptly.

I have thyroid problems. Can I still have a normal pregnancy?

Yes. Many women with thyroid disorders have healthy pregnancies with appropriate medical care. Thyroid hormone requirements and treatment can change during pregnancy, which is why women with known thyroid disease may need monitoring and treatment adjustments. Dr. Rutuja can review your thyroid history, medications and test results and guide you regarding appropriate pregnancy care. Never stop thyroid medication on your own without discussing it with your doctor.

Will I need more scans if I have a high-risk pregnancy?

Possibly, but the answer depends on why your pregnancy is considered high risk. Additional ultrasound scans or fetal monitoring may be recommended when your medical condition or pregnancy circumstances make closer assessment appropriate. Dr. Rutuja decides the type and frequency of monitoring based on your individual clinical situation rather than following the same schedule for every patient.
