What is fertility evaluation?

Fertility evaluation is a structured assessment used to understand factors that may be affecting your ability to conceive.
The purpose is not to perform every available test. Instead, Dr. Rutuja selects investigations based on your individual history and clinical needs.
Depending on your individual circumstances, evaluation may look at:
  • Ovulation and menstrual cycles
  • Ovarian function
  • Uterus and fallopian tubes
  • Hormonal factors
  • Previous pregnancies
  • Medical and surgical history
  • Lifestyle and reproductive factors
  • Sperm health when applicable
  • Other factors affecting fertility

Start with understanding, not with assumptions

Conceiving is a process influenced by several factors involving both partners. Sometimes pregnancy happens quickly, while for others it may take longer.
Fertility evaluation helps identify factors that may be affecting conception and determines whether further investigation or treatment is appropriate.

Did you know?

Fertility is not only a woman’s health concern
Factors affecting fertility can involve either partner, both partners or sometimes remain unexplained even after evaluation. For this reason, fertility assessment may involve both partners rather than focusing only on the woman.

Initial Fertility Consultation

What it is
An initial fertility consultation is a detailed discussion about your reproductive health, menstrual cycles, previous pregnancies and your experience trying to conceive.
When is it required
You may consider a fertility consultation if pregnancy has not occurred after an appropriate period of trying, if your periods are irregular, if you have a known reproductive or medical condition, or if you simply have concerns about your fertility.
What to expect
Dr. Rutuja reviews your history, discusses your fertility goals and determines which evaluations, if any, may be appropriate. She explains the reasoning behind recommended tests so that you understand what comes next.

Ovulation Assessment

What it is
Ovulation is the release of an egg from the ovary. Regular ovulation is an important part of natural conception.
When is it required
Evaluation may be useful if you have irregular periods, PCOS, very long or unpredictable cycles or other symptoms suggesting that ovulation may not be occurring regularly.
What to expect
Depending on your circumstances, Dr. Rutuja may assess your menstrual pattern, hormonal factors or recommend ultrasound-based monitoring when clinically appropriate.

Ovarian & Hormonal Assessment

What it is
Hormonal and ovarian assessment can help identify factors that may affect ovulation or reproductive function.
When is it required
Testing is considered based on factors such as age, menstrual history, previous ovarian surgery, fertility history and other individual circumstances.
What to expect
Dr. Rutuja may recommend selected blood tests or ultrasound evaluation when appropriate. Not every woman needs every fertility hormone test, and results should always be interpreted alongside your clinical history.

Uterus & Fallopian Tube Evaluation

What it is
The uterus provides the environment for pregnancy, while the fallopian tubes allow the egg and sperm to meet. Problems affecting these structures can sometimes contribute to difficulty conceiving.
When is it required
Evaluation may be considered depending on your fertility history, previous pelvic infections, endometriosis, previous pelvic surgery, ectopic pregnancy or other clinical factors.
What to expect
Dr. Rutuja may recommend pelvic imaging or a test to assess the uterus and whether the fallopian tubes are open, depending on your individual circumstances.

What Our Patients Say

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

When should I see a fertility specialist if I am trying to conceive?

For many couples, fertility evaluation is considered after 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse without conception when the woman is under 35. For women aged 35 or older, evaluation is generally recommended after six months. However, you do not need to wait this long if you have irregular or absent periods, known PCOS, endometriosis, previous pelvic surgery, a history of ectopic pregnancy or recurrent pregnancy loss, or if there is a known fertility concern affecting either partner.

Does infertility mean I can never be pregnant?

No. Difficulty conceiving does not automatically mean that pregnancy is impossible. Fertility can be affected by many different factors, and some are treatable or manageable. Some couples conceive naturally after evaluation and guidance, while others may need medical or fertility treatment. The first step is understanding the possible factors affecting conception rather than assuming the outcome.

Does fertility evaluation involve only the woman?

No. Fertility can be affected by factors involving the woman, the man, both partners or sometimes factors that cannot be identified through standard investigations. Evaluating both partners when appropriate can help identify possible causes without unnecessarily delaying care. A semen analysis is often a useful initial investigation when male-factor fertility is being assessed.
