What Our Patients Say
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is a high-risk pregnancy?
A high-risk pregnancy is one in which the mother, baby or both may have a higher chance of developing complications compared with a routine pregnancy. This can happen because of a health condition that existed before pregnancy, such as diabetes or hypertension, a condition that develops during pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes or pre-eclampsia, or factors such as multiple pregnancy or a previous pregnancy complication. Being labelled “high risk” does not mean that something will definitely go wrong. It means your pregnancy may benefit from closer observation and a more individualised care plan.
Does having diabetes mean I cannot have a healthy pregnancy?
Not necessarily. Many women with diabetes have successful pregnancies, particularly when the condition is appropriately managed. Diabetes during pregnancy does, however, require careful attention because elevated blood sugar can increase the risk of certain complications. Dr. Rutuja can help monitor your pregnancy and coordinate appropriate blood sugar management, nutrition and treatment. If you already have diabetes and are planning a pregnancy, discussing your health with your doctor before conception can also help optimise your care.
Is high blood pressure during pregnancy dangerous?
High blood pressure during pregnancy can sometimes be mild and manageable, but certain hypertensive disorders can become serious if they are not recognised and managed appropriately. Pre-eclampsia is one such condition and can affect multiple organs and the placenta. This is why blood pressure monitoring and appropriate assessment during antenatal care are important. If you experience severe headache, vision changes, severe upper abdominal pain or other concerning symptoms, seek medical assessment promptly.
I have thyroid problems. Can I still have a normal pregnancy?
Yes. Many women with thyroid disorders have healthy pregnancies with appropriate medical care. Thyroid hormone requirements and treatment can change during pregnancy, which is why women with known thyroid disease may need monitoring and treatment adjustments. Dr. Rutuja can review your thyroid history, medications and test results and guide you regarding appropriate pregnancy care. Never stop thyroid medication on your own without discussing it with your doctor.
Will I need more scans if I have a high-risk pregnancy?
Possibly, but the answer depends on why your pregnancy is considered high risk. Additional ultrasound scans or fetal monitoring may be recommended when your medical condition or pregnancy circumstances make closer assessment appropriate. Dr. Rutuja decides the type and frequency of monitoring based on your individual clinical situation rather than following the same schedule for every patient.
