What Our Patients Say
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Do I need a special diet during pregnancy?
You do not necessarily need a complicated or restrictive “pregnancy diet.” Instead, pregnancy nutrition focuses on eating a varied, balanced diet that provides appropriate energy, protein, vitamins and minerals. Your nutritional requirements change during pregnancy, and some supplements are commonly recommended, such as folic acid and iron, depending on your individual needs and medical advice. Dr. Rutuja can help you understand what is appropriate for your pregnancy rather than following generic diet plans.
How much weight should I gain during pregnancy?
There is no single ideal weight gain that applies to every woman. Recommended pregnancy weight gain depends partly on your pre-pregnancy BMI, the number of babies you are carrying and your individual health circumstances. Your doctor can monitor your weight over the course of pregnancy and determine whether your weight gain is appropriate. The goal is not to minimise weight gain, but to support healthy maternal nutrition and fetal growth.
Can I lose weight during pregnancy if I am overweight?
Pregnancy is generally not the appropriate time to follow a weight-loss diet without medical supervision. If you begin pregnancy overweight, the focus is usually on maintaining adequate nutrition and achieving an appropriate pattern of pregnancy weight gain rather than intentional rapid weight loss. Dr. Rutuja can guide you based on your pre-pregnancy BMI, pregnancy progress and medical conditions.
What nutrients are particularly important during pregnancy?
Several nutrients become particularly important during pregnancy, including folate, iron, calcium, vitamin D, iodine, protein and other vitamins and minerals. The exact requirements and need for supplementation depend on your diet, health, pregnancy stage and laboratory results. A supplement should not automatically replace a balanced diet, and you should discuss supplements with your doctor rather than taking multiple products without guidance.
What should I eat if I have gestational diabetes?
If you have gestational diabetes, your diet should be planned around your blood sugar levels, nutritional requirements and pregnancy needs. This may involve paying attention to carbohydrate portions, meal timing, fibre, protein and overall food quality. However, there is no single diet suitable for every woman with gestational diabetes. Dr. Rutuja can help you develop an appropriate approach alongside blood glucose monitoring and any medication that may be required.
